The 2015 annual APPCG Chinese New Year reception was hosted by Richard Graham MP in the House of Commons earlier this month, co-sponsored by the China Britain Business Council and VisitBritain, with guests of honour DEFRA Secretary of State Liz Truss MP and H.E. Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming.
“As we enter the year of the sheep it is worth noting that bilateral trade is up 15%, Chinese investment last year into the UK was about £6 billion and we are exporting everything from Rolls Royce engines to race horses.” said Richard Graham MP, Chairman of the APPCG.
Guests included many businesses already working or hoping to work in China, alongside representatives from the Chinese Embassy, the Cabinet Office, UKTI, and MPs and Peers from all parties, as well as some of the 10 ethnic Chinese Prospective Parliamentary Candidates for the 2015 General Election.
DEFRA Secretary of State Liz Truss MP and Chinese Ambassador to the UK H.E. Liu Xiaoming both gave speeches that highlighted the strengthened links between UK and China. Liz Truss spoke about the importance of food and agriculture, as “one of the largest areas for potential UK-China trade”, whilst the Ambassador welcomed the Year of the Sheep, which “starts with ships”, as the world’s largest container ship recently arrived in the UK from China.
