Chair Richard Graham, Chair of the HK sub group Lord Wei and Dep Chair Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown together with Lord Hoffman and other parliamentarians hosted Secretary Teresa Cheng during the latter’s visit to London.
The breakfast inevitably focused on the independent rule of law in Hong Kong, the single most important component of the successful ‘One Country, Two Systems’ model of governance in HK.
The Justice Secretary spoke on HK’s recent rankings in various recent international surveys, highlighted the recent appointment of two additional British judges to the Court of Final Appeal in HK, (Baroness Hale and Beverly McLachlin) and discussed the role of HK as a centre of services and arbitration for Chinese Belt and Road projects, including the Bay area of the Pearl River delta.
Parliamentarians commented on how useful the recent APPCG recent visit to HK had been, especially just after the GREAT technology Fair. This was a strong symbol of how closely the UK and HK work together.
